Choosing the Right Bassinet or Cradle

Newborn babies look so innocent while they sleep. They're so small and helpless. This makes choosing a safe bassinet or cradle extremely important.

Even though baby can't do much by himself, yet, it is possible for him to get into trouble. You want to make sure that where he sleeps is very safe.

A bassinet or cradle will probably hold your baby for 4-6 months before he has to move on to a crib.

The most basic question, of course, is which one do you want? A cradle typically rocks, while a bassinet may not. Cradles are generally heavier than bassinets. Compare several models before making your decision.

Some safety considerations:

  • Check for sturdy construction. The base should be wide enough to discourage tipping, which becomes especially important if you have other children who might like to peek over the sides.
  • Spacing between slats or spindles should be less than 2-3/8 inches.
  • If you choose a model that folds, make sure all locks and latches are secure and properly made.
  • The mattress should fit tightly in the bed. You should not be able to get more than two fingers between the mattress and the bassinet.
  • Sides should be smooth, with nothing that could accidentally cut the baby.
  • Wheels should lock, as should rockers on cradle.

Most of all, you need to make sure the cradle or bassinet is used safely. Do not allow young children near it without supervision.
